First Revenue Students Receive Diplomas At University of Limerick
The University of Limerick today conferred the first class of 113 students from the Revenue Commissioners with Diplomas in Applied Taxation. These students are the first to graduate from the groundbreaking course, which arises from the academic partnership between the Revenue and the University.
Mr Frank Daly, Chairman of the Revenue Commissioners said today, "It is a matter of enormous pride to us to see the first group of Revenue graduates receive their diplomas from the University of Limerick. Their hard work has achieved formal recognition by a distinguished learning institution and has enhanced the professionalism, effectiveness and reputation of the Revenue organisation. Today we have the first tangible results from a unique and innovative partnership - a real meeting of minds between the academic and business experiences"
Under an agreement signed in September 2004, which signalled the establishment of a partnership in training, education and research in the taxation area, UL provides quality assurance, validation of examinations and third level accreditation of the Revenue's technical tax training programme.
Professor Roger Downer, President of University of Limerick said today, "Our academic partnership with the Revenue Commissioners has facilitated 113 students achieving diploma status in Applied Taxation. This is good news for the University, for the Revenue Commissioners and indeed for all involved in the broader taxation environment. The partnership between the Revenue Commissioners and the University is an example of what can be achieved, when an organisation focuses on staff development and a University has the flexibility and capacity to meet their needs and aspirations"
University of Limerick has the largest tax faculty in Ireland. The faculty is focused on delivery of academic qualifications, with a major emphasis on practical application in the broader tax environment.
Margery Stapleton, Director of the University of Limerick Centre for Taxation Studies, said "This presentation of Diplomas in Applied Taxation to 113 students represents an historic day for the Revenue Commissioners and this University. The presentation also represents the progressive thinking at senior level within the Revenue Commissioners and the University's ability to respond quickly and effectively to current needs. Our Taxation Centre looks forward to further developing our academic relationship with the Revenue Commissioners and responding to other needs in taxation education that will inevitably emerge in the broader environment."
In the coming years the University will develop a significant research capacity within the Centre for Taxation Studies. This facility will be of benefit to academia, business and of course the Revenue Commissioners.
