Vehicle Registration Number plates

The use of registration plates in any format other than outlined below or shown in the advertisement below is prohibited by law. Vehicle owners who use them are liable to fines of up to €1,265.

The main requirements are:

  • the registration number in plain black capital letters on a white reflective background
  • the county of registration in plain black letters in Irish language at the top
  • the EU flag, and the letters 'IRL' in white, on a blue reflective background on the left side as shown
  • no other numbers, letters or markings are permitted.

Note: These regulations do not apply to vehicles registered before 1 January 1991, or to vehicles registered in the 'ZV', 'ZZ' or trade licence series.

The format, dimensions and technical specifications of registration plates to be displayed on motor vehicles are laid down in the Vehicle Registration and Taxation Regulations 1992 (S.I. 318/92 as amended by S.I. 432/99).
