Customs operation at Knock International Airport

Revenue’s Customs officers backed up by Customs Dog Units seized a small quantity of drugs at Knock’s International Airport last Saturday (15/07/2006). Their visit was part of Customs operations to control drugs and tobacco smuggling.

Knock Airport has developed significantly as point of entry into Ireland from the UK and many mainland European countries. Three Dog Units were involved in screening 2,770 passengers and their baggage from a total of 15 flights. While no commercial quantities of contraband were seized the dogs detected a quantity of Cannabis resin, which was seized.

This weekend’s operation by the Dog Units and support staff from Revenue was in direct response to the detections made by the regional Customs Dog Unit based in Sligo in the last few months. Customs plan to increase its focus on Knock Airport and say that their presence will become a familiar feature for travellers through this and other regional airports.
