Seizure of 160,000 Cigarettes in Dublin Airport

In an operation against organised smuggling gangs, Officers of Revenue's Customs Service at Dublin Airport yesterday (01/03/2007) seized 160,000 cigarettes from two flights which had arrived from the Canary Islands. The cigarettes included 'Palace'; 'Dorchester'; 'Mayfair' and 'Marlboro' brands. The cigarettes are valued at approximately €61,987. The Revenue at risk amounts to approximately €50,861. Ten people, including eight from Northern Ireland, one from Cork and one from the Canary Islands, were questioned in connection with the smuggling and files are being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

To date in 2007 Customs Officers at Dublin Airport have seized over 4 Million cigarettes and 236Kgs of Tobacco.
