6 Million Cigarettes seized at Rosslare Europort

Officers from Revenue's Customs Service at Rosslare Europort have today (11/08/2008) seized over 6 million contraband cigarettes. The L&M and Regal brand cigarettes have an estimated street value of €2.2 million with a potential loss of revenue amounting to €1.65 million.

The haul was described as fruit and vegetables in an attempt to evade detection by Customs. The lorry and trailer, which arrived by ferry from Cherbourg on Saturday, have also been seized. The load is believed to have originated in Spain.

The driver of the lorry has been questioned and released. No arrests have been made.

Investigations are continuing with the assistance of Gardai and other European enforcement agencies.
