Cigarette Smuggler Fined €1,000

Radion Lingu, a 43 year old Romanian, was fined €1,000 today (14/10/08) following conviction for cigarette smuggling.

Officers from Revenue's Customs Service at Dublin Airport had discovered 21,000 L&M cigarettes in his bags when he arrived on a flight from Frankfurt. The value of the cigarettes was approximately €1,658 with a potential loss to the Exchequer in the region of €5,700.

He was arrested, with intent to defraud the State, either directly or indirectly, of such duty, contrary to Section 119 of the Finance Act, 2001, as amended by Section 138 of the Finance Act, 2002, and appeared before Judge Mc Mahon at Blanchardstown court were he was convicted and fined.
