Customs Seize €439,000 Suspected Drug Money at Rosslare Europort
Officers of Revenue's Customs Service at Rosslare Europort have today (Friday 19th September 2008) detained in excess of €439,000 in cash under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
The money was discovered in the door panels of a car which was about to board the car-ferry to France. Two Irish males, one in his 20's and the other in his 30's were travelling in the car.
Officers later applied for, and were granted a three month detention order under the Proceeds of Crime Act to carry out further investigations, by Judge Gerard Furlong at Gorey District Court. Customs and Gardai from Wexford Garda station will investigate the source of the cash. It is believed the money was being exported to finance the importation of large a consignment of drugs.
The find was made as a result of risk profiling by Customs officers. This detention brings to €2.9 million the total detained by Customs officers under the Proceeds of Crime Act, to-date in 2008.
Ends 19/09/2008
