Customs seize 9 Million Cigarettes at Dublin Port
Officers from Revenue's Customs Service today (29/01/08) seized 9 million contraband 'Raquel' brand cigarettes at Dublin Port.
The cigarettes, with an estimated street value of €3.1 million were concealed in a 45 foot container that arrived from Belgium. The contents of the container appeared on the manifest as 'Household Goods' and were consigned to a fictitious company in County Monaghan.
The detection was a result of container profiling and a scan by the Customs X-Ray Scanner team. The potential loss to the exchequer was approximately €2.5 million.
Investigations are ongoing.
