Revenue and JTI (Ireland) sign Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

The Revenue Commissioners and JTI (Japan Tobacco International) Ireland Limited today, Wednesday, 4th November 2009, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which sets out a framework of bi-lateral co-operation between them to counter the smuggling and sale of contraband and counterfeit JTI branded product in Ireland.

The MOU was signed by Commissioner Liam Irwin on behalf of the Revenue Commissioners and by Mr Martin Southgate, General Manager on behalf of JTI Ireland.

Speaking at the signing Revenue Commissioner, Liam Irwin stated:
"Revenue is committed to combating cigarette smuggling and the sale of counterfeit and contraband tobacco. We are determined to use every means at our disposal to intercept illicit tobacco products at the point of importation and where they do get through, to detect and prevent their illegal sale. Already this year, we have seized 200 million cigarettes, including 120 million seized last week in Operation Samhna. We have also secured numerous convictions in the courts and will continue to prosecute those engaged in this illegal activity. Sharing information and improving co-operation with the trade is of considerable assistance to us in this important work. This MOU with JTI Ireland, which will strengthen the existing co-operation between us, is a very welcome development".

JTI Ireland’s General Manager, Martin Southgate said:
"Today’s signing consolidates the ongoing co-operation, which is now well established, between The Revenue Commissioners and JTI Ireland Limited in the fight against the illicit trade of tobacco. In 2007, JTI signed a 15 year agreement with the European Commission. The agreement with the EU and the 27 Member States of the European Union defines JTI’s cooperation to combat the illegal trade of cigarettes in the European Territory. In keeping with JTI’s policy, this MOU reinforces our commitment to combat the smuggling and sale of both contraband and counterfeit tobacco in this country".
