Major Alcohol seizure in Dublin Port

Officers from Revenue's Customs service in Dublin Port yesterday (08/09/2009) seized 4,000 litres of liquid consisting of almost 100% pure alcohol. The alcohol had the potential to create up to 20,000 litres of counterfeit spirit with a value of €570,000 and a potential loss of revenue amounting to €350,000. The liquid was packed in 800 five-litre drums and was described as "car wash". The load had been consigned to a fictitious business address in Co. Louth.

A spokesperson said, "in addition to the potential loss of revenue and the threat to legitimate trade, this product could have posed a serious health risk to the consumer because of unknown quality control in the manufacturing process."

The consignment, which originated in Bulgaria, arrived in a container on the ferry from Holyhead.

Investigations are continuing.
