Customs seize Cannabis valued at €290,000
Officers from Revenue's Customs Service at Dublin Airport today (09/03/09) seized 24 kgs of herbal cannabis with a street value of €290,000.
The discovery was made when officers examined the baggage of a 32-year-old Dutch male when he arrived off a flight from Johannesburg, South Africa. The drugs were wrapped in 'Spiderman' and 'Hanna Montana' gift wrapping.
The man was arrested and handed over to the Santry Garda Drug Squad and is due to appear in court tomorrow morning.
This is the third significant seizure of herbal cannabis made by Customs Officers at Dublin Airport in the past week. The total value of drugs seized amounts to €596,000. On Tuesday 3rd March 13.5 kgs of herbal cannabis, concealed in a false bottomed suitcase, was seized from a 26-year-old male UK national, while on Friday 6th March a further 12 kgs was seized from a 40-year-old South African man after officers discovered the drugs concealed in hollowed-out reams of paper.
Drugs to a value of nearly €1.8 million have been seized and 12 related arrests have been made by Customs officers at Dublin Airport to date in 2009.
