Oil Seizure in Galway

Officers from Revenue's Customs service, assisted by Gardai, detained 25,800 litres of mineral oil in an operation in county Galway yesterday (09/05/2009). An Irish registered oil tanker and three other vehicles have also been detained.

The tanker was in the process of discharging oil into underground storage tanks at a retail premises in county Galway. There were 9,100 litres of suspected laundered oil in the tanker and a further 16,700 in the underground tanks of the retail premises. Three additional vehicles have been detained pending enquiries regarding payment of Vehicle Registration Tax.

The vehicles and oil were removed to a secure location under Garda escort pending analysis and investigations.

A number of people were questioned and investigations are continuing.
