Customs arrest two for cigarette smuggling at Dublin Airport

Officers from Revenue's Customs Service today (Monday, 27/07/2009) arrested two Lithuanian nationals for smuggling cigarettes from Poland through Dublin Airport.

The two women, aged 28 and 29 respectively, who had arrived into Dublin Airport from Riga, Latvia were arrested and charged with being concerned in the evasion of a Duty of excise on excisable products.

They later appeared in the Blanchardstown District Court. Judge Hugh O’Donnell remanded both women on their own bail of €250, sign-on at Store Street Garda Station between 9am and 9pm each day and surrender their passports. They are due to appear again at Blanchardstown District Court at 10.30am on Thursday 30th July 2009.

These arrests are part of Customs at Dublin Airport on-going campaign against the organised smuggling of cigarettes from the Baltics and Eastern Europe.

Earlier today in a separate operation at Dublin Airport Customs Officers seized 55,000 cigarettes and 23kgs of Tobacco after they targeted a flight arriving from Abu Dhabi. The cigarettes and tobacco are valued at €29,632 with a potential loss of revenue of €24,180.
