Customs Seize 3 Tonnes of Tobacco at Dublin Port
Officers from Revenue's Customs Service, based in Dublin Port, assisted by officers from the Organised Crime Unit at the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, yesterday (02/08/2011), seized approximately 3 tonnes of loose tobacco at Dublin Port.
The tobacco, with a retail value of €2.5m and a potential loss to the Exchequer of €1.5m, was detected coming through Dublin Port having arrived in a shipment from China. The tobacco was described on the manifest as 'polyresin crafts' and was concealed in large polyresin urns.
National and international investigations are ongoing.
This operation is part of an ongoing strategy between Revenue and An Garda Siochana to combat the smuggling of cigarettes and tobacco into the State.
