Man Sentenced to 5 Months in Prison for the Evasion of Duty on Cigarettes
Revenue's Customs Service in Cork Airport on Sunday (5/6/11) arrested a man when he was detected with 14,400 'West' brand duty free cigarettes in his luggage.
The 50 year old non-Irish national had arrived on a flight from Tenerife. Following arrest by Customs officers, he was taken to Togher Garda station where he was charged with the evasion of duty on excisable products. He appeared at a special sitting of Cork District Court on Monday (6/6/11) where he was remanded in custody to appear before the same court today (8/6/11).
Judge Dave O’Riordan sentenced the individual to 5 months in prison.
The estimated value of the goods concerned is €6,034 with a potential loss to the exchequer of €4,500.
A further 30,000 cigarettes were seized as part of the operation.
