Man arrested for Cigarette Smuggling at Dublin Airport
Officers from Revenue's Customs Sevice this morning (12/05/11) arrested a man at Dublin Airport for attempting to smuggle cigarettes from the Canary Islands into the country.
The 25 year old Latvian national was detected by Officers when he arrived in Dublin airport this morning. On searching his bag, Officers discovered 9,940 "Marshall" brand cigarettes with an estimated value of €4,225 and potential loss to the exchequer of €3,990.
The man was arrested and charged with the evasion of exise duty. He appeared before Judge Denis McLoughlin in the Criminal Court of Justice this morning where he was sentenced to a six month jail term with 14 days to appeal.
