Customs Uncover Oil Laundering Plant in Co. Monaghan

Officers from Revenue's Customs Service, An Garda Síochána and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food this morning (21/07/11) uncovered an oil laundering plant in Ballybay, Co. Monaghan which had the capacity to launder approximately four million litres of fuel per annum with a potential loss to the Exchequer of €1.8m per annum.

The plant was situated on farmland and concealed in a shed amongst large bales of straw. Officers seized 36,000 litres of fuel, bleaching earth, two oil tankers and one grain lorry with a concealed tank at the plant. Approximately 5,000 litres of toxic waste was also discovered. Ancillary equipment was dismantled and seized.

Investigations are ongoing.
