Customs seize cigarettes and counterfeit alcohol in Limerick

Officers from Revenue's Customs Service last Friday (13/01/2012), seized over 86,000 cigarettes, 16 Kilos of roll-your-own tobacco and 25 litres of counterfeit spirits in Limerick City as part of a planned operation with Gardai. A quantity of fireworks and DVD's were also seized.

The total seizure including 'Gold Classic', 'Superking', 'Palace' and 'Marlboro' brand cigarettes and 'Golden Virginia' tobacco, has a retail value of €45,000 and a potential loss to the exchequer of over €35,000.

Customs officers executed search warrants at two premises and one Irish male in his 40's was questioned.

The seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes.

Investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.
