Revenue seizes cigarettes and tobacco in Dublin
Over the last number of days, officers from Revenue's Customs Service have seized over 22,000 cigarettes in Dublin.
In an intelligence-led operation in Dublin yesterday (23/10/2014) officers from Revenue's Customs service seized a total of 6,780 mixed brand cigarettes and a small quantity of roll your own tobacco with a retail value of €3,700*.
As part of the operation, officer's acting under court warrant and assisted by members of An Garda Síochana discovered the cigarettes and tobacco when they searched a private dwelling in Dublin City Centre. A man was questioned regarding the cigarettes and investigations are continuing at present.
In a separate operation on Wednesday (22/10/14), officers from Revenue's Customs Service seized 15,380 '7' cigarettes with a retail value of €7,000* at Dublin Port. The cigarettes were intercepted as a result of routine profiling in a depot of a courier company.
These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes in the shadow economy. * The tobacco and cigarettes seized represent a total potential loss to the Exchequer of €8,800. This is assuming that it would have displaced the equivalent full tax paid quantity of cigarettes.
