Revenue seizes cigarettes and tobacco in Cork

As part of an operation codenamed ‘Churn’, officers from Revenue’s Customs Service, assisted by detection dog Harvey, today (10/8/15) seized 30,000 cigarettes and 16kgs of tobacco with a retail value of €22,700* in Cork.

The ‘Blackmount’ cigarettes and ‘Flandria’ and ‘Golden Virginia’ tobacco were seized when officers executed a search warrant on a private residence on the North side of Cork City.

One Irish male in his 40s was questioned and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes in the shadow economy. If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.

* The cigarettes and tobacco represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €17,500. This is assuming that it would have displaced the equivalent full tax paid quantity of the cigarettes and tobacco.
