Summary

Alan Rees, born 14/09/1983, with an address at Tinure, Dunleer, Co. Louth was charged with the following offence:

  • Keeping prohibited goods within the meaning of Section 94 (1) of the Finance Act 1999, contrary to Section 102(3)(c) and (4) of the Finance Act 1999, as amended.

Background to the case:

On 17 May 2013, acting on information received, Revenue Enforcement Officers detected an active oil laundry operation in a commercial unit located at Orion Business Centre, Ballycoolin, and Dublin 15. Prohibited goods (vessels, tanks, pumping equipment, cat litter, etc.,) were seized from both the unit and a van.

At Dublin Circuit Court on 31 October 2014, Alan Rees pleaded guilty to one count of keeping prohibited goods.

Outcome

On 11 March 2015, Judge Martin Nolan sentenced Alan Rees to imprisonment for a period of 18 months. The judge took into account, the guilty plea, the accused's co-operation, his decent background and the fact that the crime was difficult to detect.
