Revenue uncovers oil laundering plant in Co. Monaghan
Officers from Revenue's Custom Service, assisted by Gardaí in Monaghan, today (19/09/2012) uncovered an oil laundering plant in Clontibret, Co. Monaghan. The oil laundering plant, which was located in a disused mushroom house, had the capacity to launder approximately two million litres of fuel per annum with a potential loss to the exchequer of €1m per annum.
10,000 litres of laundered fuel, nine bags of bleaching agent, a car and a van were seized at the site. Officers also discovered eight tonnes of toxic sludge in eight 'IBCs' (Intermediate Bulk Containers). This operation was the result of surveillance activity carried out by Revenue's Customs Service and forms part of Revenue's on-going crackdown on laundered fuel. Enquiries are ongoing.
Revenue would like to remind motorists and the public that they should be aware of the risks posed to their vehicles by using laundered fuel. It also takes much needed funds from the Exchequer; hurts legitimate trade and of course it is funding criminal activity.
