Revenue seize cigarettes and tobacco worth over €3.4 Million at Dublin Port
Yesterday, 7/7/2021, as a result of routine profiling, Revenue officers seized over 3.5 tonnes of raw tobacco at Dublin Port.
The smuggled tobacco, with an estimated retail value of over €2.1 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €1.7 million, was discovered in a consignment which had originated in Germany concealed in boxes labelled as ‘wood flooring’.
Separately, on Sunday (4/7/2021), again at Dublin Port and also as a result of routine profiling, Revenue officers seized over 1.9 million illicit cigarettes with an estimated retail value of over €1.3 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €1 million.
The illegal cigarettes branded ‘Platinum’, were discovered with the assistance of Revenue’s mobile X-ray scanner, concealed in a consignment which had originated in Dubai.
Investigations into both seizures are ongoing.
These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products. If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.
