Export Repayment Scheme

Re-importing a car

A car that gets a repayment under the export repayment scheme is unregistered. If you are bringing it back into the State you must present it at an NCTS centre for registration within the 30-day timeframe.

VRT will be payable at the time of registration and a new Irish registration number will be issued. As the car will be on the official record as exported, it will not be possible to have it road taxed without getting the new registration number.

It is an offence to display the original number on such a car.

Notifying the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport

Where a vehicle is being permanently removed or exported from the State, there is a responsibility on the person exporting the vehicle to notify the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport of the date of export.
