Register a new vehicle

What is the vehicle registration service?

This service enables business users who are registered for Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) to register new vehicles and pre-inspected vehicles online. You must also be registered to use the Revenue Online Service (ROS).

What you need to use the service

New Vehicles (Irish Distributor vehicles)

Please ensure that the Certificate of Conformity (COC)[1] for the new vehicle has been uploaded before you proceed.

You will need the following information to use the service:

  • your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • birth certificate number[2]
  • statistical code[3]
  • vehicle colour[4]
  • country of origin
  • engine number
  • exemption details[5]
  • reserved registration details[6]
  • payee Trader Account Number (TAN) payment method
  • value of optional extras
  • owner name and address.

Vehicles Pre-Inspected by the NCTS (National Car Testing Services)

  • VIN number
  • Owner Name and address
  • Payee Trader Account Number (TAN)
  • Exemption Letter.

How to access the service

Sign in to ROS and follow these steps:

  • select 'VRT' from the 'Tax Type' option menu in the 'File a Return' section 
  • select the desired option from the 'Type' option menu
  • click the 'File Return' button.

[1] A CoC must be on file unless the vehicle being registered is of category type T5 and UV.

[2] A CoC must be on file unless the vehicle being registered is of category type T5 and UV.

[3] This information is needed if the vehicle being registered is of category type T5 and UV.

[4] This information is needed if the vehicle being registered is of category type T5 and UV.

[5] This information is needed if the vehicle has an exemption.

[6] This information is needed if the vehicle has a reserved registration number.
