ROS Digital Certificate renewals 2016 – reminder to save your new Certificate

ROS Digital Certificates must be renewed every two years for security reasons. If your certificate is due for renewal, you will be prompted to renew when you log in to ROS. Users are sent renewal reminders in advance of the renewal date and it is important that certificates are renewed in a timely manner in order to ensure continued access to ROS.

Assistance and tips

When you renew your ROS Digital Certificate you are in fact receiving a new version of your certificate.

It is vital that you have a file copy of this new certificate on your computer so that you can continue to access ROS - if you do not have this file, you will have to obtain a new certificate.

The key tip is to ensure that you Backup your certificate and Save it when prompted; to ensure that you create the new certificate file. After creating the file, you must store it in a safe location for future access.

Before you renew your certificate, please look at the information and assistance on the ROS Help Centre. A short videoExternal link will also show you the necessary steps to ensure that you renew correctly and don’t have any subsequent problems accessing ROS.

The key steps are

  • click Backup when prompted;
  • look for another prompt to Save or open the file and click Save – this may be at the very bottom of your screen;
  • the new file will go to your Downloads folder and will not have the key symbol your old certificate file had;
  • make sure that you have the file on your computer for future access. Copy it to your ROS\RosCerts folder if possible;
  • it is the new file that you need to load into your browser to logon to ROS; and
  • if you have loaded the old file in error, you must remove it (using the bin symbol) before you can load the new one.

Feedback from the ROS helpdesk

Some customers have experienced problems accessing ROS after renewing their certificates. The feedback from recent queries to the ROS helpdesk is that users have had difficulties after renewing because:

  • certificates copied among teams or common users are renewed, but not all users within the team are aware of the renewal or the updated login details. Accordingly, when they try to login subsequently with the old, incorrect details they generate an error message (BAS110 message);
  • users are not familiar with loading the new certificate file from their "Downloads" as opposed to "C:\ROS\RosCerts"; so they try to login using the old version of the certificate, resulting in error messages such as "invalid password" or "BAS110"
  • if an old version of the certificate has been loaded, users are not aware that they must remove the old certificate from their login screen before loading the new file; and
  • users have not backed up or saved the new certificate. If you don’t ‘save’ the new certificate after renewing, then you may be unable to access ROS in the future and you will have to get a new certificate.

If you lose your certificate file, you must contact the ROS Technical Helpdesk and obtain a new certificate. This can take up to 10 working days.
