Management of a defined contribution occupational pension scheme

This section outlines the Value-Added Tax (VAT) treatment of the management of defined contribution occupational pension schemes.

The management of defined contribution occupational pension schemes may be exempt from VAT. The management of one member arrangements does not come within the scope of the exemption and is subject to VAT.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled that defined contribution occupational pension schemes may be treated as special investment funds. This treatment applies where certain conditions are met.

Consequently, Revenue accepts that a defined contribution scheme (within the meaning of the Pensions Act 1990) is regarded as a specified fund.

Further guidance contains more detailed information on the VAT treatment of the management of defined contribution occupational pension schemes.
