Traceability and Security Features System

Overview

Articles 15 and 16 of the Tobacco Products Directive (Directive 2014/40/EU) provide for European Union wide systems of traceability and security features for tobacco products to address the issue of illicit trade.

From 20 May 2019 all cigarettes and roll-your-own placed on the market in Ireland must be traceable. Every packet of cigarettes or roll-your-own manufactured or imported after 20 May 2019 must carry a unique identifier.

A one year grace period is allowed for cigarettes and roll-your-own manufactured or imported before that date.
