Revenue seize drugs and cigarettes at Dublin Airport

Yesterday (19/01/2022), as a result of routine operations, Revenue Officers seized over 7.8 kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of approximately €157,200.

The drugs, which were concealed in a box described as ‘drones’, were discovered in an air cargo consignment that had arrived into the State from the US and were destined for delivery to an address in Dublin city centre.

Separately, last Friday (14/01/2022), as a result of routine profiling, Revenue Officers seized approximately 10,000 cigarettes. The smuggled cigarettes, branded ‘Rothmans’ and bearing a Ukrainian tax stamp, have a retail value of approximately €7,100, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of more than €5,800.

The illegal cigarettes were discovered when Revenue Officers stopped and searched the checked baggage of a man who had disembarked a flight from Kyiv, Ukraine.

A Romanian national in his 40’s was charged under Section 119 of the Finance Act 2001 at Ballymun Garda Station and remanded to Cloverhill prison.

Investigations into both seizures are ongoing.

These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and smuggling. If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on Confidential Phone Number 1800 295 295.
