Summary
Mr. Stephen Niall McVeigh, with an address at Meadowlands, 16B Station Road, Lisburn, Northern Ireland, BT2 82ET was arrested at Dublin Port on 17 January 2025 following the detection of 7,600 cigarettes & 21 Kg of fine cut tobacco for the rolling of cigarettes in his vehicle. Mr. McVeigh entered a plea of guilty to an offence, contrary to Section 119(2) of the Finance Act, 2001, as amended :
- Were concerned in the evasion of a duty of excise on excisable products to wit, 7,600 cigarettes & 21Kg fine cut tobacco for the rolling of cigarettes with intent to defraud either directly or indirectly the State of such duty.
Outcome
On 20 October 2025 at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Nolan convicted Mr. McVeigh on count 1 evasion charge. The court imposed a sentence of 1 year imprisonment which was suspended in full for 1 year.
