VRT implications of trade with the UK during the transition period

Overview

Most vehicles imported into the state from overseas are sourced in the UK.  Customers will therefore have to be aware of the implications of Brexit on the vehicle registration process.

Under the withdrawal agreement, the UK will be in a transition period from February 2020 until 31 December 2020. During this period all procedures in relation to registering a vehicle from the UK remain unchanged.

Vehicles brought in after the transition period may be subject to Vehicle Registration Tax, VAT and Customs Duties. There will also be implications for the recognition of UK type approvals once they leave the European Union (EU). Customers are advised to keep up to date with these changes when considering purchasing from the UK.
